About
La Gomera is the kind of island people underestimate until they arrive. Most expect just another Canary Island and leave wondering why they didn't stay longer. Cactus Coliving sits in the capital, San Sebastián, five minutes from the beach, and what makes it special is not the location alone but the community and the island's relationship with its own people. Rebeca, who has been the community manager here since day one, says it best: this island heals you. She came seven years ago and never left. People show up for a couple of weeks and quietly extend again and again. The island settles you. It makes you slow down, get grounded, and actually look around. La Gomera has about 20,000 residents. Everyone knows everyone quickly. After a week, you are no longer a visitor. You are joining locals at the Romerías in Canarian dress, throwing baby powder at Carnival, hiking into a national park that dates back to the dinosaurs, or stumbling into lunch with a local family at the end of a trail. The nightlife is local parties, not clubs, and in summer almost everything is free. This is not a place for people who want noise and constant stimulation. It is a place for people who want to work well, feel rooted somewhere, and give something back to the community around them. As Rebeca puts it: expect to give a little bit of your heart when you come, because you will almost certainly find friendship for life.Work & WiFi
- WiFi runs at 300 Mbps download and 300 Mbps upload, with a backup line from a second provider
- Signal is reliable throughout, with the strongest connection in the communal living room
- There is a dedicated coworking space with 15 workstations and ergonomic chairs
- A phone booth is available for calls
- Power outages are rare, and a backup system is in place
- All rooms include a work desk
Community & Social
- The social life here runs daily and it is genuinely varied
- A typical week includes beach yoga at 8am on Monday, a ping pong tournament in the evening, wine yoga on Tuesday, a family dinner on Wednesday, sunrise yoga Thursday morning followed by snorkeling in the afternoon, beach volleyball on Friday, a community activity on Saturday, and a Sunday brunch followed by yin yoga
- None of this feels forced
- Rebeca has been running this community for three years and still texts past guests when she finds old photos of them
- What makes it different from most colivings is the relationship with the island itself
- Cactus actively joins local events, from the San Sebastián Romerías in January, where everyone dresses in Canarian clothes and eats lunch in the main square with locals, to Carnival, where the whole house builds costumes together from recycled materials
- After one week here, the locals know your name
- The coliving keeps in touch with people long after they leave, and many come back regularly
Comfort & Living
- Rooms include private rooms with shared bathroom, private rooms with ensuite, and shared rooms with two twin beds
- All rooms have a fan, a desk, and storage
- Some rooms have blackout curtains
- Shared bathrooms are split between no more than three people
- All rooms have a lock
- There is enough space in every room for a yoga mat
- Communal spaces include a fully equipped kitchen, a living room, and a garden or terrace
- Linen, towels, and weekly room cleaning are included
- Free drinking water, coffee, and tea are available
- Coworking access, WiFi, community events, and yoga lessons are all included in the price
- Laundry, meals, family dinners, and island excursions are not included
- The street outside can be noisy at times, and being a small town, you will not find everything a city offers nearby
Location & Surroundings
- Everything you need day-to-day is within five minutes on foot: the beach, restaurants, cafes, shops, a supermarket, a gym, a farmers market, and the bus station
- The paddle court and a lighthouse with panoramic views are about ten minutes away
- Hidden beaches are reachable in around one hour on foot
- All bus lines depart from the station five minutes from the house
- The nearest airport is in Tenerife, approximately 45 minutes away by public transport including a 50-minute ferry crossing
- A car is helpful but not required for day-to-day living
- The neighbourhood is very safe
- La Gomera is considered one of the safest islands in the Canary archipelago
Perfect for
People who want to slow down, work well, and actually connect with a place. Good for remote workers who want more than just a desk, for people going through a life transition, or for anyone who wants to learn or improve their Spanish inside a real local community. Ideal for those who are open-minded and willing to give as much as they take. Best suited to guests staying at least a month.
Not right for
Not a good fit for people who need constant stimulation or a busy city environment. San Sebastián is a small town and has limited options compared to urban hubs. If you are looking for a strong nightlife scene or a packed social calendar with parties every night, this is not your place. Also not ideal for guests who plan to stay isolated or contribute nothing to the community around them.
