About

Picassa is not a hostel, not a hotel, not an Airbnb. It is a home. The name says it all: casa means house in Spanish, and this one sits on Pablo Picasso street, in the heart of a small Andalusian village of 1,500 people where everybody knows everybody, and strangers are invited for coffee before they even finish introducing themselves. Alejandra, the founder, was born and raised here. She spent over a decade living abroad before the pull of home brought her back after the pandemic. She opened Picassa to share what she loves most: the warmth of this village, the food, the light, and the kind of human connection that feels like it has been lost in a lot of places. The house itself dates back to the 18th century. It has been carefully restored and spans almost 1,000 square meters across three floors, with a large central patio full of bougainvillea and palm trees, a fully equipped kitchen with a fireplace at its heart, a library, a coworking space with six workstations and a meeting room at the top, and a wine cellar that doubles as a cinema and events space called Picassa Studio. Life here moves slowly and intentionally. Mornings start with coffee in the kitchen. Thursdays mean the farmers market, churros, and fresh local produce. Community dinners, movie nights, hikes with the local hiking club, bike rides along the Via Verde, and occasional belly dance or Qi Gong classes fill the week. Alejandra's 94-year-old grandmother has taught guests how to make traditional Easter sweets. That is the kind of place this is. The one word Alejandra uses to describe Picassa is light. Bright, sunny, warm, and alive.

Work & WiFi

  • WiFi download speed is 350 Mbps and upload is 120 Mbps, provided by Movistar, one of Spain's most reliable providers
  • The connection is stable during peak hours and outages are rare
  • There is a dedicated coworking space on the top floor with 6 workstations, ergonomic chairs, a meeting room, and a phone booth for calls
  • Residents can also work from the library on the ground floor
  • No wired ethernet option is available
  • No backup internet connection is in place
  • Power outages are rare, occurring only a few times a year

Community & Social

  • Community life at Picassa is built around food, shared time, and genuine connection
  • A typical week includes a Thursday morning visit to the farmers market followed by churros, a weekly community dinner prepared together by residents, movie nights in the living room or Picassa Studio, a weekly bike ride along the Via Verde, and hiking with the local club
  • Depending on the season, there are weekly Qi Gong classes (September to May) or belly dance classes (June to July)
  • Tapas lunches, weekend trips to Granada or Almeria, and cultural events round out the calendar
  • Alejandra lives on-site full-time and is the community manager
  • The house is also open to the village: movie nights and small events are occasionally hosted for locals too
  • As Alejandra puts it, the sobremesa tradition, those two or three hours of conversation after a meal, is at the heart of what Picassa is
  • The best moments are often the unplanned ones

Comfort & Living

  • The coliving occupies an 18th-century Andalusian house of nearly 1,000 square meters with thick stone walls that provide natural sound insulation and help keep rooms cooler in summer
  • There are 6 rooms in total accommodating up to 14 guests
  • Room types include a single room with one single bed, a quadruple room with four single beds, a double room with one double bed, two double or twin rooms with a king-size bed or two single beds (one of these has an adjoining room for a third guest), and a twin room with two single beds
  • All rooms have blackout curtains and a lock on the door
  • Some rooms have a work desk
  • There is no air conditioning, but fans are provided in every room during summer and central heating is available in winter
  • Bathrooms are shared, typically between 2 to 4+ guests depending on the room
  • Linen, towels, and laundry facilities with detergent are included in the price
  • Room cleaning is available on request
  • Free coffee and tea are provided
  • Communal spaces include a fully equipped kitchen with fireplace, a living room, a large central patio and garden terrace, a library, and the Picassa Studio event space
  • A gym is also available on site
  • Three bicycles are available for residents to borrow

Location & Surroundings

  • Picassa is located in the center of Purchena, a village of around 1,500 people in Andalusia, southeast Spain, not far from Granada
  • Two supermarkets are within 200 meters
  • Cafes, bars, tapas bars, a bakery, a butcher, and a local pub are all within walking distance
  • A gym and sports facilities are also nearby
  • The weekly Thursday farmers market takes place in the village
  • The nearest large supermarket is 6,4 km away, with a weekly group shopping trip organised
  • A sushi restaurant is 7 km away and a variety of international food options are within a 20-minute drive
  • The Mediterranean coast is around 35 minutes by car
  • The nearest airport is 88 km away
  • Public transport is limited: daily buses run to Granada and Almeria, and BlaBlaCar is widely used
  • A car is helpful but not required
  • The Via Verde greenway for cycling, jogging, and hiking begins nearby
  • Summer temperatures can reach 30 to 40 degrees Celsius in July and August
  • The best months to visit are April through October

Perfect for

Remote workers and digital nomads aged 25 to 40 who want to slow down, cook together, eat well, and actually get to know a place. People with stories to tell, an interest in local culture, and the kind of open-heartedness that makes a stranger a friend by the end of a shared meal. Solo travelers who want community without pressure. Anyone curious about what it feels like to truly live somewhere, even if only for a month.

Not right for

People who need constant stimulation or a big-city lifestyle. Purchena is a small, rural village and the pace is slow by design. Also not ideal for guests who prefer to keep entirely to themselves: this is a shared-living community and some social engagement comes naturally with the territory. Summer heat of 30 to 40 degrees Celsius can be difficult for those from cooler climates.
