About

Tursi Digital Nomads is not about the building. It is about what happens when you put a group of open-minded remote workers in a place that most people have never heard of, and give them the time and the space to actually connect. Salvatore started this back in 2021 in his hometown of Tursi, a small village in Basilicata, southern Italy, by opening a coworking space inside a former monastery. What began as an escape from COVID lockdown has grown into something much larger: over 600 people from across the world have joined since then, and around 30 percent come back for another edition. Some have even met their partners here. The 2027 Italian season runs across three stops. It opens in Matera in late February, one of the oldest inhabited cities in Europe, with a historic centre that looks almost painted. Then comes Tursi in June, the original home of the project, where the coworking space inside the monastery now runs on 1 gigabit fiber, part of a Huawei Digital Village partnership. The season closes in Padula in August, a village built around another historic monastery, where a local incubator organisation adds an interesting creative layer. Each stop is a few weeks long. The group shares the journey, the meals, the activities, and the place together. Salvatore and Maria are on site to organise everything, solve problems, and bring the kind of warm southern Italian energy that, as many past guests will tell you, makes the whole thing click.

Work & WiFi

  • WiFi download speed of 100 Mbps and upload of 50 Mbps
  • Backup internet connection via a second provider is available
  • The connection holds up well during peak hours and bad weather
  • A dedicated coworking space with 20 workstations is included
  • Ergonomic chairs are provided at every workstation
  • A phone booth or separate call room is available for calls and video meetings
  • Early and late calls can be taken without disturbing other residents
  • Power outages have never been reported at these locations
  • Coworking access is included in the price
  • In Tursi specifically, the former monastery coworking space runs on 1 gigabit fiber as part of the Huawei Digital Village programme

Community & Social

  • Community is the core of every Tursi Digital Nomads edition
  • This is not a place to work in isolation; it is built for people who want to share the journey
  • A full-time community manager is on site throughout each stop
  • In 2027, Salvatore and Maria are both present
  • Organised activities run weekly, covering the local area, shared meals, and experiences specific to each village
  • The programme includes hiking, swimming, and access to a gym where available
  • Salvatore cooks for the group when possible
  • Meals around a shared table are where he believes the real bonds form
  • All programme information, schedules, fellow guests, and local tips are shared through a dedicated digital tool, not just a WhatsApp group
  • The group typically runs between 10 and 20 people, large enough to feel like a real community, small enough that everyone actually knows each other
  • The social vibe is rated 9 out of 10
  • It leans toward connection and shared experience rather than nightlife
  • An online alumni community runs webinars every two weeks, with past guests sharing their skills
  • Around 30 percent of guests return for another edition

Comfort & Living

  • Accommodation includes private rooms, shared rooms, studio apartments, and full apartments depending on availability
  • Standard rooms are around 20 square metres
  • Bed sizes available include single, double, and king
  • Bathrooms are either ensuite or shared between two people
  • Rooms have blackout curtains, air conditioning, heating, and a work desk
  • Enough floor space for a yoga mat in the room
  • Note: room doors do not have individual locks
  • Note: walls between rooms are thin, so light sleepers should be aware
  • Communal spaces include a fully equipped kitchen and a living room or lounge
  • Linen and towels are included in the price
  • Utilities including water, electricity, air conditioning, and heating are included
  • Free drinking water is provided; coffee and tea are not included
  • Transportation and meals are not included in the price
  • Villages have uneven or hilly roads, which is worth knowing if you have mobility considerations

Location & Surroundings

  • Stop 1: Matera, Italy, 28 February to 21 March 2027
  • Matera is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, with a historic centre of cave dwellings and stone architecture
  • Stop 2: Tursi, Italy, 5 June to 4 July 2027
  • Tursi is a small village in Basilicata, in southern Italy, close to the Puglia border
  • The coworking space is inside a restored former monastery in the old town
  • Stop 3: Padula, Italy, 1 August to 22 August 2027
  • Padula is a village in southern Italy with a historic monastery at its centre
  • A local incubator and acceleration organisation is based there
  • All three stops are fully walkable; no car is needed for daily life
  • The nearest supermarket is around 4 minutes away on foot
  • Many restaurants and cafes are within walking distance
  • Gym, hiking, and sea or lake swimming are accessible nearby
  • Public transport is limited at all stops
  • The nearest major airport is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes away
  • The neighbourhood is described by the host as completely safe
  • Best months to visit in this region are March through October

Perfect for

Remote workers who want to experience real southern Italy, not the tourist version, alongside a genuine group of international people. First-time digital nomads will find everything organised and supported. If you are someone who travels for the community more than the destination, and you want a place where lasting friendships, and occasionally more, tend to form, this is worth looking at seriously.

Not right for

People who prefer to explore independently and keep to their own schedule. Solo travellers who want a quiet, anonymous stay. Anyone who needs party-heavy nightlife. Guests who want long-term residency: each stop lasts three to four weeks and then the group moves on. Village roads are uneven and hilly, which can be a challenge for some. Light sleepers may find the thin walls between rooms an issue.
