Where to Stay for 1 to 3 Months: Coliving vs Airbnb vs Booking (2026)

In October 2026 we asked our WhatsApp community a simple question: what kind of traveler are you? The backpacker with one bag who moves on after a day or two. The slow traveler who stays three to six months in one spot. Someone whose rhythm changes every trip. Or the one in the middle: "I like to settle in for 1 to 3 months."

The middle one won, and not by a little: 37 of the 53 votes. 🤍

So this guide is for you, the 1 to 3 month traveler. Long enough to want a real routine and real friends, short enough that a lease makes no sense. Let's figure out where you should actually stay.

The short answer: for a 1 to 3 month stay, coliving usually fits best when you travel solo and want a desk, a community and one all inclusive price. Airbnb wins when you want a whole apartment to yourself or travel as a couple. Booking.com works best for short bridges of a few nights to a few weeks, because most properties on it accept stays of up to 30 nights by default.

What our community told us

Here is how our members voted (they could pick more than one answer):

  • 37 votes: I like to settle in for 1 to 3 months

  • 10 votes: It changes every trip

  • 5 votes: Slow traveler: 3 to 6 months in one spot

  • 1 vote: Backpacker: one bag, 1 to 2 days per place

That is 37 of 53 votes, about 70%, for the 1 to 3 month rhythm. Only one vote went to the classic backpacker. And honestly, that matches what hosts tell us all the time: the people who stay around a month are the ones who show up to Friday dinner, join the weekend hike and still text the house group chat a year later.

That rhythm has a name now too. Some call it slowmad, others call it a workation that lasts long enough to feel like life. Whatever you call it, it changes how you should book.

Why 1 to 3 months is the sweet spot

A month is the point where a place stops feeling like a trip. You learn which café has the good WiFi, the neighbor starts to wave, and your work week finds its shape again.

It is also the point where the booking platforms change their rules. Airbnb treats any reservation of 28 nights or more as a monthly stay, with monthly payments and a separate long term cancellation policy. Booking.com uses the same 28 night threshold for its monthly rate plans. So the moment you cross four weeks, you are playing a different game than a weekend tourist.

Three things matter most at this length:

  • Routine: a real desk, a chair you can sit in for eight hours, internet you trust for calls.

  • People: the first week can feel lonely anywhere. We wrote about that awkward opening stretch in Is Coliving Worth It?

  • Flexibility: you want to be able to extend if you fall in love with the place, or leave if you don't.

Coliving vs Airbnb vs Booking for a 1 to 3 month stay

Here is how the three options compare for one person staying one to three months.

  • Best for: Coliving: Solo remote workers who want community. Airbnb: Couples, families, people who want full privacy. Booking.com: Short stays and bridges between longer bases.

  • Typical minimum stay: Coliving: 1 week to 1 month. Airbnb: Set by the host. Booking.com: Usually none.

  • Stays over 30 nights: Coliving: Built for it. Airbnb: Yes, 28+ nights counts as a monthly stay. Booking.com: Only if the property opts in (up to 90 nights).

  • Workspace: Coliving: Coworking and desks usually included. Airbnb: Varies a lot, check photos. Booking.com: Hotel desk at best, aparthotels vary.

  • Bills and WiFi: Coliving: Usually all inclusive. Airbnb: Usually included, check limits. Booking.com: Included.

  • Community: Coliving: Built in: dinners, hikes, skill sharing. Airbnb: None unless you build it. Booking.com: Minimal.

  • Privacy: Coliving: Private room, shared common spaces. Airbnb: Full apartment possible. Booking.com: Private room.

When coliving wins

Coliving was built for exactly this length of stay. You get a furnished room, a workspace, bills and WiFi in one monthly price, and a house full of people who are also working during the day and free in the evening.

Our partners show the range well. Wonder House, a big Catalan farmhouse near Montseny Natural Park, has a one month minimum stay and starts at €600 per month for a bed in a shared room, with private rooms at €990 and ensuites at €1,110 for one person. Satvana in Portugal's Alentejo lists €690 per month with a two week minimum. Prices are from the listings in October 2026, so always check the listing for your dates.

When Airbnb wins

Airbnb is the better choice when you want a whole apartment, when you travel as a couple and both need a quiet room for calls, or when the city you picked has no coliving at all.

Know the monthly rules before you book. For stays of 28 nights or more, Airbnb charges the first month up front and the rest in monthly installments, and a long term cancellation policy applies that generally asks for 30 days notice of changes. Many hosts add a monthly discount, so compare the real total at checkout, not the nightly price.

When Booking.com wins

Booking.com is strongest for hotels and aparthotels, last minute bookings and short stays. For a 1 to 3 month stay it has one big catch: by default, properties on Booking.com accept stays of up to 30 nights. Properties can opt in to longer stays of up to 90 nights, but many don't.

That makes Booking.com perfect for the bridge: the first few nights while you look around, or the week between two coliving stays.

Airbnb or Booking: which is better for a month?

For a full month, Airbnb is usually the easier choice, because monthly stays are a normal part of how it works and many hosts offer monthly discounts. Booking.com is usually better for anything under two weeks, especially in cities with lots of hotels.

But here is the honest part: neither of them gives you people. If the reason you want to stay a month is to actually belong somewhere for a while, that's where coliving comes in.

Does coliving make sense for 1 to 3 months?

Yes, and it is the length most colivings are designed for. Many set a minimum stay of one week to one month precisely so the community has time to form. Before you book, check four things on the listing:

  1. Minimum stay. Montino above Lago Maggiore accepts stays from one week, Wonder House from one month.

  2. What "all inclusive" means. Wonder House, for example, runs shared weeknight dinners for a small extra fee to cover ingredients.

  3. The workspace. Look for a dedicated coworking area, not just "WiFi available".

  4. The vibe. A playful, social house and a quiet retreat are both colivings, but they are very different months. Read the "perfect for" and "not right for" notes on each listing.

Workation ideas: try a month long chapter

The easiest way into a 1 to 3 month rhythm is a workation with a start and an end date. You arrive with a group, work during the day, and share a theme in the evenings. Several of our partners run exactly that, and you can find all of them on our Events page.

How to plan your 1 to 3 month stay

  1. Pick your rhythm first. Do you want buzz and group adventures, or quiet focus with a bit of company? That decides the coliving, not the other way around.

  2. Book one month, then extend. Most hosts are happy to extend if there is space. You stay flexible and you never get stuck somewhere that doesn't fit.

  3. Use Booking.com for the bridges. A few hotel nights between two longer stays are easy and flexible.

  4. Check your visa. If you are not an EU citizen, short stays in the Schengen area are generally limited to 90 days in any 180 day period. Three months in Europe can use up all of it.

  5. Ask for a discount. Several partners give our community a code. Montino (MNTCLVCOMM10), Satvana (CCSATVANA10) and Wonder House (CCWONDERHOUSE10) each list 10% off when you book directly. You'll find all current offers on our Deals page.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay for 1 to 3 months as a digital nomad?

If you travel solo and want community and a workspace, a coliving is usually the best fit, since most are built for stays of one week to a few months with bills and WiFi included. If you want full privacy or travel as a couple, a monthly Airbnb is often better. Booking.com suits short stays and the nights in between.

Is coliving worth it for just one month?

Yes. One month is the length many colivings are designed for, and some, like Wonder House, set it as the minimum stay. It gives you enough time to settle into a routine and build real friendships.

Is Airbnb cheaper for a month?

Often yes compared to booking night by night, because many hosts offer a monthly discount for stays of 28 nights or more. Compare the full checkout total, including cleaning fees, against a coliving that already includes a workspace and bills.

Can you book a month on Booking.com?

Sometimes. By default, properties on Booking.com accept stays of up to 30 nights, and only properties that opt in accept longer stays, up to 90 nights. Check the property's maximum stay before you plan around it.

What is the minimum stay in a coliving?

It depends on the house. Among our partners it ranges from one week at Montino and The Better Neighbors, to two weeks at Satvana and NomadUnion, to one month at Wonder House.

Is it cheaper to rent by the day or by the month?

By the month, almost always. Airbnb hosts often discount stays of 28 nights or more, Booking.com properties can offer monthly rate plans for 28 nights or more, and colivings price their rooms per month.

Which type of accommodation offers monthly rates for stays under 3 months?

Colivings, monthly Airbnb stays and some aparthotels. Colivings are the most straightforward, because their prices are already monthly and usually include bills, WiFi and a workspace.

What is a workation?

A workation is a stay where you keep working your normal job from a new place, usually for a few weeks to a few months, often with a group and a shared program in the evenings and on weekends.

What is the difference between a slow traveler and a 1 to 3 month traveler?

Slow travelers usually stay three to six months or more in one place. The 1 to 3 month traveler settles in long enough for a routine and friendships, but keeps moving a few times a year.
